Where Salina Started

The history of Salina is rooted in innovation, industry, and resilience, helping shape the community into one of central Kansas’ most dynamic regional hubs. Founded in 1858 near the Smoky Hill River, Salina quickly grew as a center for agriculture, rail transportation, and trade before becoming nationally connected through manufacturing and military history. During World War II, Smoky Hill Army Airfield played a major role in B-29 bomber training operations and later evolved into Schilling Air Force Base, helping fuel decades of economic growth and aviation development in the region.

Salina is also tied to iconic American business history through H.D. Lee, founder of Lee Jeans, whose company operations helped establish the city as a manufacturing center.
